Orthopaedic Institute for Children salutes Las Niñas for volunteer service

It’s not easy being a deb these days. And it’s even harder for a deb’s mother. But then, young ladies who give countless hours to charity and, ultimately, are rewarded with a formal dinner dance aren’t called debutants anymore. The term went out during the Vietnam era when public displays of affluence took a back seat to social change.

Fast-forward to 2015 and we find many South Bay groups of mothers and daughters not only juggling full loads of high school studies, sports and other extracurricular activities, but also spending an amazing number of hours volunteering for their individual cause.

In the case of Las Ninas, daughters of members of Las Madrecitas (a support group for Orthopaedic Institute for Children, formerly Orthopaedic Hospital), mothers and daughters drive to downtown Los Angeles to volunteer at the hospital. Week after week they rack up hours and gain experience working with orthopaedic patients and health care professionals.
